Great book. But is it useful for Sybase users?
Not for the faint of heart, the book is ADVANCED!!If you've been working with SQL Server for awhile and want to improve you Transact-SQL skills, look no further -- this is the book for you.
I've been working in MSSQL for many years now and this book taught me loads I didn't know the first night I opened it. Undocumented DBCCs, cool statistical functions, array handling, extremely useful administrative code (you can use lots of it right out of the box), etc., all combine to create the most comprehensive body of TSQL work I've ever seen.
Note: the book requires and repays careful rereading. You will not be able to read it in one setting. I spent a week and a half on it the first time through, and that was hitting the book every night. It's very dense, and you'll want to study the annotated code listings to get the most out of them.
Like the other reviews have said, this book is not just for gurus. It's also not for the faint of heart -- you will have to study it to get the most out of it. However, if you learn everything in it, you'll be a guru yourself when you get done. I'm still working on that one myself.
Will change the way you write codeMy time with SQL Server began seven and a half months ago. Before that, I was an Oracle DBA for some nine years. Since then, I've been reading every book I could to get a handle on SQL Server. This is easily the most helpful of all the books I've read. It gets down to business quickly and immediately immerses you in the technology. You have no choice but to either sink or swim - fortunately, I began to swim almost immediately.
When I first came over from the Oracle team, I was really disappointed when I started writing stored procedures because T-SQL seemed so weak compared to PL/SQL. Turns out I was all wet on that. I didn't know just how powerful the language could be. Having digested this book, I'd say T-SQL is easily as powerful as PL/SQL, if not more so. Moreoever, I'd say that SQL Server is now in the big leagues -- it can hold it's own with Oracle, DB2 or anyone else. I wouldn't have said that before I read this book. It has shown me a lot of the power under the hood in SQL Server that I'd never have guessed was there. All I can say for Oracle is that they better watch out. SQL Server is definitely right up there with them.
Back to the book. It's a wonderful book that will change the way you write code. Get yourself a copy, then mark off a couple weeks to do nothing but work through it. I hope it helps you as much as it helped me.

BRILLIANT......... YET AGAIN!
I can recommend this book to anyone! Dee Henderson is great!U.S. Marshal Marcus O'Malley is helping with security at Chicago Jefferson Renaissance Hotel, making sure nothing goes wrong at a judicial conference. During the banquet, political speech writer Shari Hanford, stumbles into security control center by accident. There she meets Marcus and he leads her back to the ballroom. Both finding each other attractive, they set a date to have coffee the next morning. They part happily anticipating seeing each other again. Little do they know that they would see each other again sooner than they expect, under very grim circumstances.
Judge Carl Whitmore, friend of the Hanford family, is unexpectedly chosen to be the next Supreme Court justice. He is murdered that very night, killed in cold blood. But the killer did not expect to have Shari open the door from the adjoining room while he is still there. He fires at her but she is saved by her brother, Josh, who pushes her out of the way. Josh is hit in the shoulder and Shari's father is shot in the chest. The killer escapes and U.S. Marshal Marcus and others must make sure he is caught and brought to justice. And one more thing, they must protect Shari because the killer wants her dead, for she saw his face. Marcus must guard Shari from danger while at the same time begins to fall in love with her. But Marcus is uncomfortable with Shari and her praying to God. He had once been a believer when he was very young and had prayed all the time. Then he had been hurt when his mother had died and didn't believe in prayer anymore. Can Shari teach Marcus to believe in God and prayer?
I just loved the characters of Marcus and Shari. They are so realistic with such good characteristics such as kind, loving, trustworthy, patient, and caring. But this story just isn't about Marcus and Shari, it also involves the O'Malley's, Dave Richman (Kate O'Malley's boyfriend), and Marcus' partner, Quinn Diamond. I love the banter between Lisa O'Malley and Quinn! This book focuses on prayer and I absolutely agree with everything it says about prayer in this book. Just because God doesn't answer you doesn't mean that He's not listening. God is always there and He has a plan and a time for everything. We just have to trust in Him.
The first in the O'Malley series is "The Negotiator" in which the main character is Marcus' sister, Kate O'Malley. This is also another great book! Then after this book is "The Truth-Seeker" with Lisa O'Malley then "The Protector" with Jack O'Malley. Can't wait to read those, too! Other books by Dee Henderson is "Danger in the Shadows" (written before "The Negotiator" whose main character is Dave Richman's sister, Sara Richman) and "True Devotion", the first in the Uncommon Heroes Series. I highly recommend all of these books!! Trust me, they're all fantastic!
Hooked

Riveting from page one
Great Encouragement
True perfection!

My Favorite So Far'The Protector' let me down a little. I just couldn't mesh with the characters like I did with the other books. But Ms. Henderson totally made up for it with 'The Healer'. This book had all of my emotions in an uproar. You really feel for Rachel because she has to deal with so much in this book. But sometimes we have to go through the difficult times to grow closer to God.
I would definately recommend this book to any lover of Christian fiction or even any type of fiction. Dee Henderson is an author who knows how to captivate her audience and keep them there.
One of Dee's Best! Very emotionally stirring! This book begins with flood relief, moves to a school shooting, and ends with the first O'Malley family funeral. While the story does present the reader with a couple of unlikely situations, Henderson gives the reader one of her best stories. The whole O'Malley family is back together in this book. Despite the burnout and emotional drain that several of the O'Malley's are facing, the joy of family loyalty and love comes through in parts of the book. Despite the fact that Jennifer O'Malley loses her battle with cancer, the reader sees a portrayal of how a Christian faces such an end.
Emotions run deep in this book and Henderson has written them well. I think this book reveals a great deal of maturity in Henderson's development as a writer. If you have read the other O'Malley books, you'll enjoy this one. If you haven't read the previous books in this series, this book is probably not the best entry point. It would be worth your while to go back to the beginning and get to know this great family. The O'Malley family is brilliantly conceived. Enjoy getting to know them!
An emotionally touching story! The O'Malley family consists of seven brothers and sister, three boys and four girls. Since they were little they had been in the same orphanage and when they got out of the orphanage, they decided to 'adopt' each other, taking the name O'Malley as their family name. They all have very important jobs, Marcus is a U.S. Marshal, Kate a negotiator for hostage situations, botched-up robberies, etc., Jennifer is a doctor, Jack a fireman, Stephen a paramedic, Rachel a trauma psychologist, and Lisa is a forensic pathologist. This story is about Rachel O'Malley, 'the healer'.
Rachel O'Malley by the faith and prayers of her family is now a Christian. But being a trauma psychologist is a tense and stressful job. Working at disasters for the Red Cross, trying to heal the lives of children torn apart by parent's divorces, Rachel finds it hard at times to trust in Jesus to help her let go of the hurt she sees.
Captain Cole Parker, captain of a fire company who has spent the last few years fighting fires and trying to stop arsons. A devout Christian from a young age, Cole sticks by Rachel and helps her through the hard times. It is inevitable that they become closer, even reaching the point of falling in love.
But in the midst of Rachel of having to deal with the fact she might lose her sister Jennifer to cancer, tragedy strikes. When Rachel's sister Lisa O'Malley discovers a murder scene discovered in a flooded community, it is suspected that there may be a second victim. Things become worse when there is gunfire at a local school. Children are injured, children are dead, and what's so terrible is that the shooters were children. But the mystery begins when one of the bullets matches the one which had killed the victim in the flood. And that gun has disappeared. What is going on, how are the two cases connected? Rachel, Cole, and the O'Malley's must race to find the missing gun, before tragedy repeats...
Of all the books, I think that "The Healer" is one of the weakest in the series in that there isn't much of a mystery. I had already guessed much of the plot and most of the guesses were correct. But I must confess, this story is the most emotionally and spiritually touching of all the O'Malley books. From the aftermath of the shooting to Jennifer's sickness, there were moments where I felt like crying. Dee Henderson is a master at letting you get caught up into the story. The characters are likable, and I especially love Cole!
These are five books in the O'Malley Series in order, all highly recommended:
#1 "The Negotiator", Kate O'Malley's story. One of the best of the series.
#2 "The Guardian", Marcus O'Malley's story, the oldest of the O'Malleys. A great love story with an incredibly suspenseful plot!
#3 "The Truth Seeker", Lisa O'Malley's story, very suspenseful!
#4 "The Protector", Jack O'Malley's story, not as good as the previous three books yet still enjoyable.
#5 "The Healer", Rachel O'Malley's story.
#6 "The REscuer", Stephen O'Malley's story. One of the BEST books I've ever read!
Other books by Dee Henderson are:
"Danger in the Shadows", written before "The Negotiator" whose main character is the sister of Kate O'Malley's boyfriend, Sara and Walsh
#1 "True Devotion", the first in the Uncommon Heroes Series tells about the Navy SEALs.
#2 "True Valor", about Navy Pilot Gracie and Air Force Pararescuer Bruce.
#3 "True Honor", the best of the series so far with Navy SEAL Sam 'Cougar' Houston and CIA officer Darcy St. James.

Compelling, but a trifle longThe first third of the book is about Palmyra, the island where Jennifer and her boyfriend Buck wanted to get away from it all. A second couple shows up and there's tension. When the friends of the second couple lose contact, they become worried. When Buck and Jennifer show up in the stolen boat of the second couple, everyone assumes murder. When the skeletal remains of one of the victims are found, the trials begin.
The rest of the book details the trial first of Buck Walker, then of Jennifer Jenkins. Bugliosi's defense of Jennifer Jenkins rests in her not knowing that Buck Walker killed the second couple. Unraveling his client's confused often flaky narrative and fighting with an extremely partial judge, Bugliosi takes through the trial point by point with several stops in between.
While this makes for a compelling crime novel, the problem with trials is that much of the live trial is deadly dull. The high points make great drama, but there's a lot of discussions of evidence, procedures and such that are only interesting to lawyers, law school students and accused criminals. At certain points I began to wonder if I'd ever finish reading this book.
However, the quality of the writing and the interest of the case keep the book going. You are still fascinated with the case at the end even if there are dull parts in between.
An excellent book, a flawed perspective
Best true crime book since Helter Skelter.

Wonderful
The best novel I've read in a long time!
Captivating, Chilling

Suspense and romance finally get equal air time!
A Great Read
Thrilling

A Deathless Tale of the UndeadThe power of Stoker's written masterpiece exceeds the power of any screen production by a power of 10. Film isn't even the second most powerful medium for Dracula. The Naxos Audiobooks production of Dracula features a full cast but retains the format of the book. Different actors speak the journal entries of the various parties, with dialog and action being dramatized. Audio plays have been called "the theater of the mind", and that description well suits the Naxos production of Dracula. All in all, the audio play gives a satisfying way to experience the legend of Dracula.
The King of Vampire Novels, a Horror Inspiration!A rich, reclusive count from the dark land of Transylvania tires of his homeland and searches for a home abroad to quench his thirst. Not for riches, not for glory, but for blood. For this count is a member of the damned breed, the Nosferatu, the Vampire. A demon condemned to live off of the blood of the living, while being neither alive, nor dead. It is a sad and frightening tale, filled with action and suspense.
Dracula is not only famous for its introduction of the mythology of Vlad the Impaler (in somewhat diluted form) to Western culture, but also for its formula. The inescapable evil (Dracula) to be confronted by a small, yet wary band of people lead by one who knows all of the creature's secrets and weaknesses (Van Helsing) has become a Horror staple. And folks never seem to get tired of it. The subject of Van Helsing, a character who almost, but not quite, overshadows Dracula in popularity is long overdue for a novelization of his own. Van Helsing's encounters with the supernatural would most definitely draw a fanbase.
If you're a Horror fan, or just like good old storytelling, Dracula is a book not to be missed. In fact, this novel should be required reading. It just might help increase the literacy rate!
Note: this edition has an awesome cover drawn by Boris Vallejo and it claims to be unabridged (abridging this story ought to be illegal!)
The Greatest Horror Novel of All Time!

Perhaps the best book I've ever read
A compelling account of a true American hero's exploits!
An exceptional biography of a legendThis biography was very enjoyable, because it kept me on the edge of my seat. The personal stories of Hathcock, and eyewitness accounts are amazing. I can't fathom an individual who can shoot a gun accurately at 2,000 yards. But this novel gets you in close and personal with a person who lived by the motto, "one shot, one kill" at a distance of over 1,000 yards.
Henderson, the author, does a great job of describing Hathcock, and his missions by using expert witnesses and documents. Merely page through the bibliography to see the amount of research that Henderson did for this novel, and you will realize that this book must be pretty close to the absolute truth.
Overall, this book is fantastic, due to the missions that are explained in here. Henderson makes you feel right at home with this legend, and creates a lively image on each mission. As a result, this novel is easy to read, because it is a page-turner. Henderson also does an excellent job as to explain the mentality of Hathcock towards the Marines and towards the art of sniping. I never realized that a person who is a sniper must have a unique mentality in order to do this job. And Henderson shows that sniping is not for everyone.
The novel also immortalizes Hathcock as a hero and a leader.....as it should. Hathcock was at the top of his field, and literally designed the manual for this new class in the military. But his ideas have found there way into SWAT teams, and police forces through the world. Hathcock was a hero, who ultimately paid the price for his bravery in the Vietnam war. This novel is a must read for all individuals, not just the military type person!

Incredible Intense DramaFBI agent Dave Richman finds himself trapped in hostage situation, hidden from the captor but not the police negotiator. All becomes quite complex however, when the negotiator is a woman which terrifies Dave. Yet, Kate is like no other negotiator or woman he was seen before and quickly takes command of the captor with no help from him. What he can't understand is his sudden attraction to her and why that bothers him?
Kate O'Malley. as a police negotiator, had thought that she had seen it all. Of course who would have thought that a cocksure FBI agent would find himself a hidden element in this scenario. Now she has to keep her captor cool and the agent from doing anything stupid. But Dave is not stupid as he quickly realizes that Kate is one exceptional negotiator let alone woman. A woman he wants to get to know more, something that has always eluded him as he cared for his sister. Yet, as he later meets her family he senses that making time with Kate is going to be no easy task. But there are other even bigger hurdles to jump for both Kate and Dave.
Ms Henderson has crafted a vividly intense story of a young woman's search for answers to a child's strange past, accept without fear the love of a man she has come to cherish and how it is all possible when one accepts God's love. This story takes the reader on a incredibly plotted roller coaster ride full of suspense sure to keep the reader's heart in their throat as an especially evil element surfaces from Kate's past. THE NEGOTIATOR is the first of a number of planned O'Malley books; save keeper space because the men and woman of the O'Malley's are sure to learn what being wrapped in God's love means for each of them. Ms. Henderson's work has always been considered gourmet Inspirational Romance, but those who read other romance genre' need only to tantalize their palates with any of her wonderful offerings to learn what a truly gifted storyteller she is.
WARNING: PAGE TURNER!Boy was I glad I did!! It was riveting from beginning to end and I absolutely can't wait to read the next in the series. I just finished it today and just HAD to share it.
I love this book and the characters because they are all strong independent people, yet vulnerable. Like Kate O'Malley, the main character in the novel.
Kate is a negotiator who orphaned at age 9 and became part of the O'Malley family with 6 other orphans. She becomes a target and it begins with a man in a bank with a bomb. You don't even realize that's the whole kernel of the pop until later on.
She's strong, independent, intelligent, funny, sensible, logical, (all the things we women are ;) )everything you would want in a strong female lead. She doesn't take no for an answer and goes after what she wants but is open minded and will give in when it's right.
While negotiating with a man with a bomb in a bank, she meets Dave Richman, he's with the FBI. And yes, they fall in love (what did you expect?) Together they unravel a mystery that seems like any other disaster to something very personal and very dangerous.
Anyway, Dee Henderson puts a lot in one book, love, suspense, and religion. Surprise, I wasn't expecting that at all. All the themes flowed seamlessly, none overbearing or annoying, all points were creates equally to give a balanced story. And what a story.
This is only 2nd book I've read where I haven't had to stop and roll my eyes because it was either too mushy or corny. It's was very realistic. Something that could happen in real life, the reactions, behaviors and feelings. All real. That's why I couldn't stop reading it, it was as if Dee Henderson brought someone's real life into a book.
I guarantee you will LOVE this book, if not, when you write your review, you can tell me off. :)
The Negotiator will have you in suspense!!The story begins when while Kate O'Malley negotiates with a man at a bank, she meets FBI agent Dave Richman. Dave Richman is interested with her and Kate also finds him attractive, but Dave is a Christian while Kate is not. Kate has grown up trusting no one except the O'Malley family. She has seen too much violence and injustice and can't believe that there is a God if He lets such things happen. In the Bible, it says that God is merciful and just, so she thinks "then why do I even have this job"? Before Dave can really talk to her about it disaster strikes. Someone sends Kate black roses. Black roses which stand for death. A few days after, an airliner blows up, and somehow Kate is involved in it when the bomber calls up and says, "tell Kate O'Malley that I haven't forgotten the past." But Kate O'Malley does not want to remember the past. She tries to shut it out but then she is faced with shocking and terrifying evidence that the bomber may be someone she know, someone from her past! Dave discovers that he is in love with Kate and vows to protect her but will she be able to trust in Dave and the God he trusts so much in?
"The Negotiator" is very well-written. I just fell in love with the characters of Kate O'Malley and Dave Richman. It's also so suspenseful that I suggest you read it on a day when you have plenty of free time because you won't be able to put the book down! It was terrible when I had only the last few chapters to read when I had to go to school! What agony! But it's not only the suspense, action, mystery, and the excitement I had when reading it that I liked, I also loved the humor and romance in it. The humor in it very much reminds me of my sister and I when we talk to each other. This book also talks about trust and faith in not only our friends and family, but in God. God is always with us and though we don't know why He does this or why He doesn't do that, we must always have faith in Him and to pray.
The next in the O'Malley series is "The Guardian" in which the main character is Marcus O'Malley, the oldest of the O'Malley's. This is also another great book! Then after that there is "The Truth-Seeker" with Lisa O'Malley then "The Protector" with Jack O'Malley. Can't wait to read those, too! Other books by Dee Henderson is "Danger in the Shadows" (written before "The Negotiator" whose main character is Dave Richman's sister, Sara) and "True Devotion", the first in the Uncommon Heroes Series. Don't miss any of these books!
The Guru's Guide is basically structured around SQL syntax. It starts with introductory chapters on Transact-SQL, both DDL and DML. Chapters 6 onwards cover SQL in more detail. Many examples accompany the text. And the further you get into the book, the beefier it gets. Advance topics like cursors and transactions are covered well.
Stored Procedures and Triggers are only glanced over in this book - these topics are left for the more advanced Guru's Guide to Stored Procedures. But some administrative issues are covered, and covered well. System procedures are discussed, and you can find code for the useful ones that are NOT supplied by the vendors. Talking about which, another topic of interest is the undocumented features T-SQL. The things that are there, but the vendors did not want you to know about it.
Database design and performance tuning are topics sorely needed by many application programmers, in my experience, and I recommend these chapters to anyone who needs grounding in these areas. Other programming issues like full-text searching is covered, and there is a neat replacement procedure for Soundex to be found. Many bits and pieces make a good reading of the book worthwhile.
All the code are included on a CD-ROM. If you are a Sybase user, do not expect the bonus SQL editor (on the CD-ROM) to work for you. You'll get a message saying "this demo version can only connect to MS SQL Server". Should you visit the website to look for the non-demo version, you'll find a version tied even closer to Microsoft. It won't even install without MS SQL Server present. I thought that this was unfortunate.
This book covers so much that I find it hard to summarise it in a few paragraphs. It is obviously recommended for MS SQL server professionals - there are enough glowing reviews on this page. Do I recommend it for Sybase users? Well yes, maybe. If you accept that MS SQL Server and Sybase Adaptive Server have grown apart over the years and that there are many incompatibilities between the two. So while you can use the Guru's guide for ideas, hints and tips and techniques, it will not serve as an exact reference manual. But I think you'll find much of value. This is one of the better database and SQL books I have seen.
I have also purchased the follow up Guru SQL book, which is more advanced than the present book. What would also be nice is a book on SQL algorithms or patterns. Maybe Ken Henderson can do a follow-up that provides sample solutions to common SQL problems. And how about a book that covers the differences between to MS SQL Server and Sybase Adaptive Server?
